The escape from Alghero

Alghero Prison. On the night of 17 November 1945, a number of life convicts armed with rudimentary knives ambushed the prison guards as they were doing their rounds. In the violent clash that followed, Vice Brigadier Ettore Scalas and prison guards Giovanni Bacchiddu, Paolo Pittalis, Salvatore Soro and Ugo Cariddi were all killed. Using the keys stolen from the guards, six convicts reached the yard, climbed over a low roof and managed to escape over the prison wall.

In the photo: rudimentary weapons used by the life convicts, keys stolen from the prison guards, wooden shoe belonging to one of the convicts.
