Pillory or stocks

People were put in the stocks in marketplaces and exposed to public ridicule for hours or even days. Those who disturbed the peace were pilloried, but the stocks were also used to prevent thieves or individuals who had committed petty crimes from escaping. The stocks, composed of two hinged lengths of wood had either two or four holes, in which the offender’s ankles were secured.

The stocks, like the pillory, were used until the first decades of the nineteenth century.

Provenance: Saluzzo Prison, 1934
